An Artistic Crisis

Sia Furler, but simply known as Sia, is an Australian musical artist who’s been making music since 1996. She’s has won 15 different awards for her music and has written hit songs for Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, and many others. But as of late, she’s been coming under scrutiny because of the music video’s she’s been releasing for her album “1000 Forms of Fear.” The artistic views are being labeled as something that they’re not.

The first music video she made was for her song “Chandelier” and it featured Maddie Ziegler, a 12-year-old dancer who stared in Lifetime’s TV show “Dance Moms”. In the music video, it has Ziegler dancing around in a run down house wearing a blonde wig and a skin colored leotard. Now the first thing that people started criticizing was the skin colored leotard. Do to the clothing being flesh toned, some people thought the she was dancing around naked at first. That pedophiles from around the world would be saving this video to their computers. Others saying that the parents should have never let their kid do this. Lisa Suhay wrote about this on her blog titled “Maddie Ziegler in Sia Video: Right choice for an 11-year-old?” on csmonitor.com writing

“Wallace has taught dance for 30 years and both her children, now ages 17 and 22, have made dance and theater their professions. “Maddie is a role model for the girls I teach,” Wallace adds. “It’s a shame her mother isn’t teaching Maddie to think like a role model because that kind of thinking will get her farther and help her avoid the transition problems other talented young girls like Miley Cyrus had.”

Suhay also states “The song ‘Chandelier’ is Sia’s poignant cry for help.” as she sings about forgetting her problems through alcohol.

The bashing gets some added heat when Sia released her second video for “Elastic Heart” which had Ziegler in the same outfit, but with the addition of Shia LaBeouf in skin colored dance shorts playfully fighting with her in a huge birdcage. This actually had Sia apologizing on her twitter account to anyone who felt offended by the video. She wrote “I anticipated some ‘pedophelia!!!’ Cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play” I believe that people tend to complain about things just for the sake of complaining. Like how musical artist “Earl Sweatshirt” wrote on his twitter about Taylor Swift’s music video “Shake It Off” saying “haven’t watched the taylor swift video and I don’t need to watch it to tell you that it’s inherently offensive and ultimately harmful” and continued with “perpetuating black stereotypes to the same demographic of white girls who hide their prejudice by proclaiming their love of the culture”. How can you judge a video for being racist when you state that you haven’t even watched said video?

This entire situation is a prime example of the reinforcement theory. You have an artist doing something that she loves to do but people take it for something else. They were taught, whether it be friends, family, religion, that what they watched is something bad. The site “csmonitor.com” stands for “The Christian Science Monitor”. So Suhay’s reaction and response is influenced by outside sources. And the main reason for her reviewing this video is because her son Quin was watching it saying “I opted not to let Quin watch Maddie’s video because I know the song lyrics and overall message of the video would open a can of worms so big that we would fish for a week for answers to his questions.”

The one thing I’m afraid of is artists holding back there artist views because of them possibly offending a group of people. People commented saying Sia could have easily done the  video having Maddie dressed in a black leotard, in a not so run down house. But that’s not how Sia saw her music video. People need to have an open mind to things and judge things for themselves and not have others judge things for them.

The GR8 emergence of WEB slang

WEBslang

Rekt? Bae? Lordt?  Fleek? I bet you do not know any of these words. Do not feel too bad.  I did not know what these words meant before I took this language quiz on trendy phrases. While we are on the subject, is it possible that the written language emerged when the World Wide Web and social media entered the picture? These shortened phrases are trending across texts, emails, and social websites such as Facebook and Twitter.  Whether people are on mobile devices or computers, words like rekt and bae are inspired because of rage-inducing games or describing one’s love interest.  This might be a small group of popular words used across the web, but there are huge libraries and sub-categories of phrases similar to these. These up-to-the-minute abbreviations are all a part of the internet slang, and it has become its own language that continuously changes the written language of today.

According to Know your meme, Internet slang “consists of a number of different ways of speaking, sub-languages, expressions, spelling techniques and idioms that have obtained most of their meaning on the Internet.” Many sub-languages and techniques of Internet slang include shortened acronyms, emoticons, letter repetition, flaming, and so much more:

The phrases rekt and bae fit under the acronym category because they are shortened versions of “wrecked” and “before anyone else”. The sub-languages of internet slang will appeal to a variety of users, and still makes a huge impact on the online community. But with internet slang being such a diverse and gargantuan encyclopedia, how is it a pop culture piece in the 21st  century?

What makes internet slang unique is that it is constantly being modified. Depending on the popularity of  newfangled phrases, they will do two of the following: become a fad and fade out instantaneously, or will live on and become part of the written language. One word in particular that hit the mainstream is “YOLO”. Meaning “You Only Live Once”, YOLO was prominent in the song “The Motto” by the rapper Drake featuring Lil Wayne in 2011.

Drake even used the word on his twitter account on October 23, 2011, and it had a huge following from other users.

YOLO-1  drake-balcony

Even if Drake was just a regular user on twitter, his words inspired many people at the time and they immediately adapted the word as part of their communication. According to the Two Step Flow Theory, which was coined by sociologist Paul Lazardfeld, it tells us that “we are more likely to be influenced by other people than the mass media”:

These people are known as opinion leaders, and their audiences are restless in the process of social conversation. The picture of Drake standing on the balcony was symbolic to his audience members, and the words he chose to describe the scenery sticks with his followers. They decided to instantly apply those words to justify their behaviors and lifestyles as well. The word has become so immensely popular, that it has become an official word in the Oxford’s Online English Dictionary:

“You only live once (expressing the view that one should make the most of the present moment without worrying about the future, and often used as a rationale for impulsive or reckless behavior)”.

But do not get me wrong, YOLO is not a perfect word.  It can be over used to describe negligent actions:

YOLO-2

and people based their opinions on how notorious the word can be:

Whether good or bad, YOLO has influenced the public in so many ways.

Emojis, the visual images that has a variety of facial expressions and symbols, have also become a part of the written language. It started to become popular around 2008, and many apps were released. Because of the emoji’s simplistic design, it’s become its own sub-language for internet slang.  Emojis have not only been used in messaging, but has grown profoundly popular as lyrics in a song, a narrative for a story, and a plot for a movie. Since it is a sub-language, it opens an opportunity to learn how they work as a whole:

In forms of popular media, emojis inspired the creation of Emojidick. Created by Fred Benenson; a data engineer, Emojidick is an emoji translated novel that is based on Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. It was published in 2010, and can be purchased as a paperback in black and white or a hardcover in full color as of today.

There was even a parody of emojis on a youtube channel known as Smosh, a web comedy created by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla. Known as “Molestor Moon”, this video showed a darker and creepier side of emojis, and how it can affect friends if its name is mentioned three times through instant messaging.

Whether Emojis can be as sophisticated as emojidick or as perplexing as “Molestor Moon”, some of these ideas work for the audience and there are some that turns them off immediately. However, these creations with emojis are being talked about through those audience members. According to Linda Holmes article: What Monkeys Eat: A Few Thoughts About Pop Culture Writing she states that popular topics such as

“Justin Bieber, Duck DynastyBreaking BadGravity, and — yes — even Miley Cyrus twerking are all examples of what monkeys eat. Some good, some bad, some completely baffling. But all things that are making their way into a lot of people’s thinking, and provoking all kinds of conversations that we might not have otherwise.”

The internet slang is an emerging language, and it has changed written communication for many users of the World Wide Web. Some phrases and sub-languages will fade and disappear, but there will be others that will take their place and last longer.  It is a language that will stay with us for a long time because of the technologies and techniques used that innovate online discussions.

“Sinceriously” Cool

Sinceriously

Sinceriously  is a new charity campaign created by TV star Stephen Amell from the hit CW series Arrow in which the proceeds go to Stand for Silent and Paws & Stripes. Stand for Silent is a anti-bullying advocacy group started to help the parents of Ty Smalley who took his life because of being bullied. It helps Kirk and Laura Smalley mission to change kids lives and bring awareness to bullying and the real devastation it causes.

Paws & Stripes is a non-profit organization that pairs service dogs with wounded military veterans. Mr. Amell’s first charity campaign was F*CK Cancer which was organized last year. This would be his 2nd campaign in which the goal would be to sell up to a thousand items in merchandise. Basically, the word sinceriously is comprised of two words, (sincere & seriously) and as the definition explains it means to speak and act in an honest and sincere manner. To spread as much positive energy around as you possibly can. Along with the definition is a profile head shot of Stephen Amell as he is the creator of the word.

His word means so much to a lot of people and has influenced people everywhere and not just the everyday masses. Even other stars like David Ramsey  who p;ays“John Diggle” from Arrow was impacted by the campaign so much that he came up with his own word such as “hopoyfully” with Stephen’s help. Just like with Sinceriously, Hopoyfully is comprised of two words and means to be both hopeful and to joyfully receive good energy and karma as well as to give positive energy back to anyone and everyone out there.

Dave Ramsey

Sincerously is a wonderful campaign designed to help people be more honest and to express themselves in an up front way, while raising money for amazing charity groups. Mr. Amell recently relaunched the campaign which only last for 2 days after the screening of his latest episode of the hit CW series Arrow. To further promote the campaign Stephen has made T-shirts, hoodies, tote bags and more all encouraging the meaning of sinceriously and also to raise enough money for the charity of his choices.

As a strong opinion leader and popular figure, Stephen Amell’s suggestion of the campaign alone has already made it a rising success. And with the participation of the other actors and the creation of their own words is making the sinceriously campaign more profitable than ever. Now the rest of the cast from Arrow are making up their own campaign but supporting causes that they strongly feel needs more attention to be focused on.

The popularity of sinceriously has grown more now that it has been relaunched. Mr. Amell’s expectations and goals have far been surpassed since his first sinceriously campaign. He has all his merchandise posted on his websites which promote the campaign however limited the time may be. His positive message through material incentive has far reached other celebrities as well as everyday people. As an powerful opinion leader which follows the Two-Step Flow Theory Stephen not only can establish his life as a TV celebrity but stays in his natural mindset which relates him to everyday people and can influence other powerful TV figures to spread the the energy with the world.

No Hate John Barrowman

I thinks this is a powerful pop culture piece mainly for one reason. It’s super cool to see someone dress up as our favorite hero. But what makes this a piece worth talking about is the fact that Stephen can still make a difference as himself. Not as his Oliver Queen persona, nor as his Arrow persona, but as just plain old Stephen Amell. He teaches us what it means to be a hero but now he inspires us to be our own heroes in real life and he led us by example. He shows us that we don’t have to necessarily have to be a cop or a medic to help make a difference in the world. He shows us all in ways we can understand through what we like to wear that we can all help which is what makes him a hero even out of character.

Sinceriously awesome

Although this was only the relaunch of the campaign it’s a huge success. People everywhere believe that Stephen is a wonderful person for doing this and that his campaign has that flare that draws people’s attention to what they find to be important. As most people love his performance on Arrow this is just another thing they appreciate especially since it’s his idea. As the populous will continue to watch Arrow and follow Stephen’s exploits, they will also to continue to  support the sinceriously movement and support “Stand for Silent & Paws and Stripes.”
