How is Spartacus Related to Pop Culture?

There are many new television shows are aired on TV, but which one is hugely influence among it’s viewers? It is non other than Spartacus the TV series that aired on STARZ network. With its impelling drama story and its gruesome killings, it has sparked the attention of the mass media and made a huge fan base for itself. In Addition, the sex scenes that were also added in the show was also embraced by the media. However, what made the show extremely viral on the media was the passing of the shows original’s protagonist which is Andy Whitfield.

Andy Whitfield played as Spartacus, a therian warrior who becomes condemned to slavery by the Romans for denying an order from the Roman army commander. Andy was maleficent in the role and was adored by many of the shows viewers. With the passing of Andy Whitfield, many articles and videos went viral on the internet. In a blog from nytimes.com, Liam McIntyre had this to say, “Every actor dreams of getting a big break, a big opportunity. Andy’s such a wonderful actor. I don’t want to follow that guy, and everybody hurts that he’s had to give up the role, myself included.”. In addition, many social media services had many people talking about Andy’s death and why he was a great actor to play Spartacus. From tumblr.com, “Andy suffered a recurrence of the disease later in the year and was ultimately compelled to abandon his role as Spartacus.Sadly, our Champion passed away in Sydney, Australia, on September 11th, 2011, 18 months after his initial cancer diagnosis. He was 39.”. Andy Whitfield is what helped made the show as popular as it is.

In contrast, the story of the show was very told and was brilliantly executed by the entire cast. The story’s genre was tragic drama that told the story of a man named Spartacus who became enslaved by the Romans and lead a huge slave revolt against the Roman empire. In a website called Telegraph.co.uk, they explain, “An amped-up, adults-only Horrible Histories from US cable channel Starz, it tells the story of the Thracian warrior-slave’s three-year rebellion against Rome using slow-motion, limb-flinging fight scenes, rampant nudity and baroque language delivered in incongruous accents.”. Also, each antagonist in the show gave a back history as to why they became evil or more so evil. For instance, many of the villains, desire higher position in the Roman republic and more wealth.

On the contrary, what do some of the fans say about how Spartacus is better than other bit hit shows? According to Ross Jones from Telegraph.co.uk, “Spartacus is a more action-packed and more entertaining show than the hugely popular fantasy series Game of Thrones. Like Game of Thrones, it’s brimful of sex and violence. Unlike Game of Thrones, though, it’s based on fact, not fantasy but not off-puttingly in an extent.”. With a show story so loved by the fans, Spartacus will be remembered for years to come.

With the show’s huge success, how is it influenced by the fans and where do they go to show how much of a fan they are to the show? In the event called Cosplay, there was a live play featuring a scene from the show during the first season of the TV series.

Also, from richietsteadman.com, an interview with the actor Manu Bennett who portrayed as Crixus said this when he went to the Comic Con event,

“Those Spartacus fans, they follow us around. They get dressed up, which is great. I’ve been doing these comic cons for a few months now and it’s amazing how many people can dress up as a gladiator and look actually like we do, and we have professional costume artists that make our stuff. It’s amazing that people at home can put together whatever they can from their cupboards and hold costume parties and look pretty authentic.”.

In an article from the dailycaller.com, they explain what Plato thought on the impact of the media that may impact its viewers,“Plato was very concerned with how playwrights shape the way ordinary people think about things. They teach us what to laugh at. They teach us what to cry at. That shapes who you are as a human being”. This may prove true to what as to what kind of person they are, however it does not causate a person to act inappropriate in society. Instead, it inspires a person to be creative with their artistic talents and attend event where it is appropriate to act like one of the character’s on the show. With a huge fan base from the show Spartacus, many fans will continue to show their support and loyalty to the show by attending these events.

With a show so embraced by the mass media, there is no sight of seeing this show fade from memory. Many fans and I will always remember what made this show so enjoyable to watch and what made the aspects of the show very remarkable. But most of all how a truly gifted actor named Andy Whitfield, will be remember from and remind everyone why he is our champion in the show and in real life.
